Kids' Digital Scavenger Hunt Sat. March 21

On Saturday, March 21, all elementary and middle school Peace Fellowship Church kids are invited to a "Digital Scavenger Hunt"! Teams will work together to solve mysterious clues directing them to special spots on the Mall. At each spot, teams will take their group's photo, proving they solved each clue. We will depart from the VFW at 10 AM sharp and will return there by noon. Here are some important details:

A signed church permission form is required unless you've already submitted one this year. You can get a form on our website: http://peace-dc.com/permission_form.pdf
If you are a middle school student and attend Peace Fellowship regularly, you may bring one friend to the hunt.
If you are in grades 1-4, you must bring one adult chaperone who will stay with you for the entire event.
Please reply to Beth Dewhurst by Wed. March 18 if you are attending the hunt and if you are going to bring a friend so that we can be sure to have enough space in our cars and supplies for the hunt.

We are in need of a few digital cameras to borrow for this event (to be used by an adult). If we use your camera, we'd like to return the next day at church so that we can download the photos first.

This week's questions:

1. The last chapter of Hosea's prophecy has in it a final call to repentance. We noted earlier, in chapters seven and eight, that the people regularly attempted to take matters into their own hands by forming suspect alliances and trusting in their man-made idols. The prophet tells the people to tell God that they will turn away from those very practices (v. 3). Sometimes our spiritual leaders need to speak directly to us concerning the sin in our lives. Are there any un-confessed sin in your life? How might God be trying to get your attention in regards to it? Pray and ask God to reveal those areas in your life that need to be yielded over to Him.

2. In verse four, God responds by healing His people. Within these two verses (three and four) we have the classic theme of confession, repentance and forgiveness (cf. 1Jn 1: 9). God goes on to say that His love knows no bounds. In light of the severity of Israel's sin, demonstrated throughout the prophecy, how might we be encouraged to know or be reminded of God's endless love? Explain.

3. The prophecy ends by proclaiming that the righteous live according to the ways of God (v. 9). What does it mean to live according to His ways? In a practical sense, how do we accomplish t

(Hosea 12 & 13)

This week's questions:

1. Earlier we discovered that certain Jewish parents gave their children names that were indicative of their personal or social circumstances. Hosea reflected on Jacob’s birth and calls God’s people “Jacob” (12: 2). The name means “to grab the heel” or “to trick.” Read Gen 25: 19-26 and 27: 1-36. Why is the prophet calling the people Jacob? Are there any similarities between his character and the people as a whole? Explain.

2. In Gen 32: 22-32 Jacob wrestled with God. His name was changed to “Israel.” This name can mean, “to wrestle or struggle with God,” but many scholars take it to be a command: “Let God strive.” This experience appears to have been a conversion point for Jacob. Thus the course of his life dramatically changed after this event. What does it mean to wrestle with God? Have you ever contended with Him? In what ways were you changed after such an encounter?

3. According to Hosea, God reminds His people that He was the One who delivered them from their oppressors (12: 9 and 13: 4). We often need to be reminded of God’s goodness to us in the midst of our trials. Why do you think we forget about our Father’s benevolence toward us? Practically speaking, how do we remember God’s help? What is the role of our Christian communities? When has God delivered you from an impossible situation?

4. Consider the commands of 12:6:

Come back to God
Act with love and justice
Always depend on Him (or “wait for Him” as some translations have)
Spend some time in prayer committing to these three actions: repentance, caring for others with love and justice, and waiting for God as an act of faith.

This week's questions:

1. In this week's passage, we get a different glimpse into the nature of God's love for His people. Instead of matrimonial love, He now likens His relationship to Israel as a father to a son (v. 1). Considering this parental love, what do parents do for their children? What do children do to/for their parents? What is the essence of the parent-child relationship? Why do you think Hosea is drawing from this type of relationship (parent to child) as opposed to sticking with the matrimonial imagery?

2. In verse seven, God indicts His people. He said that they did not truly honor Him. In fact, we could surmise that the opposite is true. Most of Hosea's prophecy tells of how God's people dishonored Him. Nevertheless, what is true honor? Are there ways that we dishonor God, individually and collectively? Discuss. In practical matters, how can we truly honor God?

3. Through Hosea's message, God promises not to totally destroy ancient Israel even though they have dishonored Him (vv. 8 & 9). He sees a day when there will be reconciliation between the two parties (vv. 11, 12). What might that fact be telling us about God's love for His people? Does it mean that we will not be punished for sin? Is God bluffing? What are ways that we can attempt to not take advantage of God's mercy?

This week's questions:

1. Last week we discovered how the Israelites were adamant about doing things their own way; even to their detriment. Among the vile and heinous leaders that we discovered earlier (4: 8 & 5: 1), there were presumably a few voices (i.e prophets) who were trying to remind the people to follow the God of their forefathers. Unfortunately, the Israelites were a stubborn people. Hosea said that the people were so treacherous that they sought to harm and ambush their prophets (see 9: 8). Though you may never have sought to assassinate a religious or spiritual leader, can you think of a time when you stubbornly refused to heed the instruction of your spiritual leader(s)? Were there any consequences to your decision? In a broader sense, have you ever witnessed a group of people who were adamantly opposed to their leader? Discuss.

2. This week's passage evokes certain images in the reader/recipient. In 9: 10, God, initially,likened his relationship to Israel to fresh grapes in the desert. On the other hand, after unwavering disobedience on Israel's part, Hosea depicts a rather laborious set of circumstances for God's people (10: 11). What are the differences of these two perspectives of God on His people? How might we compare it to romantic love in its infancy? How might we compare it to marital love after betrayal? In what ways have we been faithful to God? In what ways do we need to grow in our faithfulness?

3. Last week our Pastor mentioned 'syncretism' in the sermon. In simplistic terms, it is a mixing of religious practice. Therefore, God's people were guilty of sharing their loyalty with Him and other deities. This week, we see that they were punished for this sin. In our contemporary American context, are there any ways that our faith could be construed as syncretistic? Consider the capitalistic ethic. In a personal sense, is there anyone or anything that we have given unhealthy allegiance to?

This week's questions:

"They look everywhere except to heaven, to the Most High." (Hosea 7:16 NLT)

1. Without question, ancient Israel incurred a horrendous set of consequences due to their rebellion and their refusing to acknowledge God. From Hosea's prophecy we are able to sense some of the affliction that encumbered the people. Briefly review the first six chapters. In what ways have we already seen how the Israelites sought to do things their own way or take matters into their own hands? How have they ignored God? Discuss the futility of their practices.

2. Unfortunately, the situation in chapters seven and eight does not get any better. In the time of their affliction, the prophet said the people sought alliances with the foreign nations Egypt and Assyria (7: 11). The irony is seen in the fact that their 'allies' would turn out to be their worst enemies. Read Isaiah 31 and 2 Kings 17: 1-23. Israel's 'friends' were not able to rescue them. In fact, they sought to do God's people harm and not good. When have you sought refuge in someone or something other than God? How do our circumstances sometimes impair our judgement? What are practical ways to seek God's help during difficult times?

3. We saw earlier that the people had poor spiritual leaders (4: 7-8) and relied on foreign and man-made deities to bestow blessings upon them (2: 8 and 4: 12). Well the political situation was just as dire! They had appointed sour leadership to lead them in the secular realm as well (8: 4a); a situation that will be tantamount to experiencing a hurricane or tornado of sorts (see 8: 7)! God doesn't mind leadership, spiritual and political. However, leaders need to be responsible and trustworthy. In light of the highly elevated pedastal that the Israelites bestowed on their improper leaders, what is a healthy, balanced and Christian perspective of our respective leaders? Consider the leaders in your church. In what ways should we be praying for them? How often should we be praying for them? Consider the same in our city and country. Let us pray for all of our leaders.

Hosea 6: 1-11

This week's questions:

1. Last week we determined that the Israelites were being punished because they did not 'know' (or rather failed to 'acknowledge') God. Chapter six begins with repentance (vv. 1-3). Now the people are acknowledging God in hopes that He might avert His indignation. When we speak of repenting, what is involved? Is it mere sorrow for sins we've committed? What, if any, actions are we to take?

2. Old Testament religious praxis involved bringing various sacrificial offerings to the spiritual leaders. These offerings were presented to God for varying reasons. To name a few, there were peace offerings, sin offerings and guilt offerings. The first seven chapters of Leviticus expound on the various offerings and what they were used for. Hosea 6: 6 says that God would rather His people demonstrate mercy and acknowledge Him as opposed to receive their burnt offerings. We may presume that the Israelites were 'religiously' bringing their offerings to the Lord. Why wasn't God pleased with them? In what ways do we go through the motions, so to speak?

3. Verses seven through nine speak of places (Adam, Gilead and Shechem) where the Israelites broke covenant with God or were otherwise unjust in their dealings with people. Though spiritual adultery is the prevailing motif of Hosea's prophecy, we see in these verses that there was injustice in the land as well. In what ways is there injustice in our city? What should Christians be praying for? Are there any practical ways we can help those who have felt the sting of injustice?

Note: Unlike the New Living Translation (NLT), some translations speak of the place called 'Adam' (v. 7). It is mentioned in Joshua 3: 16. The Bible doesn't record how the Israelites specifically broke covenant with God at this location.

Study Questions: It's Not What You Know...

Hosea 4:1 - 5:15 This week's questions:

1. In chapter four, Hosea uses a specific word to declare that the Israelites did not 'know' God (4: 1, 6). In this instance, however, this word does not mean that the people were ignorant or otherwise unaware of Him. The prophet is trying to explain that the Israelites were not 'acknowledging' God. They were purposefully moving in a direction counter to His will for them. In what ways have you failed to acknowledge God? Did you feel a sense of His conviction? Were there any uncomfortable consequences? How did you learn from this experience?

2. We learned earlier in Hosea's prophecy that Israel was worshipping Baal (2: 8). Baal and Asherah were the Canaanite gods of agricultural and human fertility. Canaanite theology held that in order to have an abundance of food and progeny, the people had to consort with temple prostitutes in an effort to have the gods bestow blessings on them. To their detriment, Israel engaged in such practices (4: 11-14). In what ways have we taken matters into our own hands, perhaps leading us to sinful behavior even to get the necessities of life? What were the consequences of not waiting for God's sense of direction?

3. Hosea's prophecy portrays a rather dismal picture of the people's spiritual leaders as well. The priests were so corrupt that they created a sacrificial system in which they benefited from the sins of the people (4: 7, 8). For an example of what this may have looked like, see the story of Eli's sons in 1Sam 2: 12-17. What specifically should the Church be praying for in regards to our spiritual leaders?

4. Unlike Israel, our national leaders are not religious leaders, but even so, how can we be praying for our next president? Also, how are Christians to be salt and light regardless of who the next president is?

This week's questions:

1. Ancient Israel had a long legacy of falling in and out of fidelity with God. The Scriptures depict a certain cycle of sin, punishment, repentance, and mercy. This is most clearly illustrated in the book of the Judges (see 3: 7 - 16 & 10: 6 - 16). During the monarchial years, it was common for the prophets to promote contrition throughout the land in the hopes that God would 'repent' or 'turn away' the consequences he had in store for their disobedience (see Jeremiah 26: 3, 13; Joel 2: 12 - 14 & Jonah 3: 8 - 10). Unlike these prophets who placed an emphasis on the people's remorse prior to divine mercy and deliverance, Hosea depicts God pursuing His bride in the midst of her 'adultery' (2: 14 - 17 & 3: 1). What is your impression of this depiction of God? What is His patience working in us (see also Romans 2: 4)? In what ways can we take God's patience for granted?

2. Restoration is a theme that emerges in this section. Because of the people's sin, they will be stripped 'naked' of God's provision. Compare 2: 8-12 (barrenness) with verses 15 - 22 (plenty). In what ways have the people been restored? Note the tangible and intangible ways.

3. Redemption and reconciliation are the central motifs of chapter three. In simplistic terms redemption is the act of buying something or, in this case, someone back. Hosea redeemed his wife to illustrate how Israel would one day be reconciled to God (3: 1, 2). In theological terms, redemption really illuminates the helplessness of those being bought back. They are unable to get themselves out of their predicament. This was Israel's situation when God promised restoration. In our Christian context, we speak of being redeemed by Jesus' blood. How has He redeemed us? How are we helpless? What was or is our predicament? Reflect on and discuss the cost.

This week's questions:

According to Hosea, God will punish the Israelites for what King Jehu did at Jezreel (1: 4). For a historical context, read 2 Kings 9 and 10 to see what happened there.

Note: Some scholars wonder why a punishment is warranted because the bloodshed at Jezreel was apparently sanctioned by God (see 9: 6-10 & 10: 30). However, many presume that the punishment is a consequence of Jehu's killing of Ahaziah, king of Judah. He fled from Jehu in Jezreel but was wounded and died in nearby Megiddo (see 9: 27). Also, see 2 Kings 10:31.

1. The ancient Israelites often gave their children names that were indicative of personal or social circumstances. In this sense, their names can be understood as 'the sign of the times' so to speak. For some examples of this see Gen 25: 24-6 (Jacob and Esau), Gen 29: 31 - 30: 24 (Jacob's children) and 1 Sam 1: 20 (Samuel). God gives Hosea specific instructions on what to name all three of the children born to Gomer: Jezreel (God plants), Lo-Ruhamah (not loved) and Lo-Ammi (not my people). What is the significance of these three children's names? What do they mean for the Israelites? Hosea's name means 'salvation.' What, if anything, could that mean for them as well?

2. What images of God and Israel are evoked by using the marriage analogy? Hypothetically speaking, what happens upon the discovery of marital infidelity? What may be some of the human responses? According to the Scriptures, how will God respond to His people?

3. In 2: 1-13 we have a case of displaced loyalty and discipline. The Israelites neglected to give God the honor and glory He deserved and attributed their good fortune to Baal (v. 8). For this they will be punished. In what ways are we personally and communally disloyal to God? What are the false gods or 'Baals' in our lives?

Poem: Challenge Wall Trust Fall

I shared this poem during the Sunday service on August 3, and a few folks asked if they could see the words, so I offer it again here for them and for others who may have missed it.

Many of us are familiar with this diagram to illustrate how Christ's cross bridges the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity:

But I always wondered what happens when you get half way across and the sticky-up part of the cross gets in the way:

So I wrote this poem as a reflection on what happens after the first easy steps of faith have been taken and the hard work of discipleship begins.

Challenge Wall Trust Fall

they made it sound so simple
God loves you and has a perfect plan and
Jesus is the drawbridge across the chasm caused by
the serpent’s seduction Eve’s advice and Adam’s avarice a
group production producing prodigal progeny perpetually
digging deeper our original ditch now bridged by Christ’s cross
consult this handy dandy diagram designed to
simplify stepping out saying sorry for sins
accepting access to amazing grace granted freely not
cheaply cheating death at Christ’s cost a
bargain bridge bathed in blood but pamphlets and pious peer pressure render this
ransom rather abstract in four-act tracts and altar call asks that
mask the Great Commission’s complete mission to
make disciples who obey and imitate incarnate
beatitude blessings for poor persecuted peacemakers to
turn cheeks turn tables with confronting love for enemies invited to
eat a feast of flesh and blood found offensive by
former followers anticipating easy answers and imperial agendas
not unlike evangelicals’ electoral ambitions
countless crusades for crass
causes occasionally compassionate for cute kids and cameras but
consistently committed to capital and co-opted by Capitol access
crossing land and sea to capture converts quickly confused by
culturally conditioned corruptions of Christ’s call to
count the cost
take up the cross
when crossing the chasm starting steps stay steady but
get ready halfway to heaven there’s a hell of a hill when
you hit the wall the tall order of Christ’s call to walk his way WWJ
wage war not with the world’s weapons but
by bearing your cross even
to crucifixion a
stumbling stick to victory-addicted Dick Cheney ditto-heads
skipping Lent for Fat Tuesday feasts every week while
waiving Kingdom requirements of daily disciplines beyond
cute quiet time-out bouts of devotional dentifrice daily brushing up
your “personal relationship” weird words to
describe Bible-browsing and whispered wish lists let’s
lose language that’s misleading lest less enlightened acolytes lose
their sincerity out of insecurity and inferiority complexes
contemplative complexions faking feelings to
seem super-spiritual wanting to worship backward for how it makes you feel
flogging in-your-face inflated ego-stroking ear-candy standards
straining to hear the Spirit in spite of pseudo-soft-rock stars’ saccharine sentiment
this is the air I breathe and
I—I’m desperate for you to
drop this dumbed-down drippiness my giddiness better inspired by
the dizzy height when I climb to the crux when I
survey the wondrous cross
count riches loss pour contempt on pride forbidden to
boast in vain things that charm me most
check my motives make others’ comfort my concern
make Christ the center not myself
make his members my mentors
contending with tensions extending despite attempted dissections and
shared dissentions athletic alignments and amistad actions
advances and retreats to reduce our defenses against friendship
forged in intimate awkwardness washing feet
feasting on philos found in food and fraternal foibles boyish barriers lowered by
bacon and basketball and boisterous bets whether
poker is a proper part of proselytizing perhaps not publicly but
even orthopraxy provides permissiveness as long as the
liabilities of license’s lusts are limited without legalism’s cannibalism
can we cross the chasm climb this cross-post challenge wall while
working in one accord ropes-course-style stretching and straining to
boost our brethren the fingers of our family of fellowship gripping
grasping gasping pushing pulling us
over the top cradled by community to reach out in unity not
cocooned in conformity save in the cross of Christ our God at
times a weary road we trod and bitter the chastening rod but
better dead than led astray by smooth-tongued tricksters trading in
itching ear theories of health wealth or whatever you want to hear from
here to Armageddon rapture riddles refreshed every election to
make you hate the scapegoat of the season call it treason to
love the enemy
welcome the stranger
heal the sick without making money an
unfunny farce to force-feed creeds out of context
proof-texting terrorists seek constitutional commandments
recommended to make myopic measures of immorality merit immolation one
nation under God but
run by bullies who give Christ a bad name according
to international evangelical cousins bearing our
curse no small burden with the bridges we’ve burned but
Christ’s call is still a free-for-all and
the chasm can be crossed just
count the cost
an arm and a leg and your life laid down like the Lamb
little children let us love not in locution but in location and
incarnation’s vocation for truth in action a reaction that reassures our hearts
when doubts condemn us
God is greater and knows better
his commandment to believe him and love each other like Christ’s wife
aka the church which is also his body the metaphors mix but
the substance stands fixed:
a span stretched from God to humanity
perfectly planned but pricey
it takes a community both
in infinite Trinity and in Christian finity to form our family for eternity
join the party it’s no picnic skip the gimmicks don’t
mimic academic tricks and stick figure schticks trash the tracts just
trust the love lavished deep and wide across the divide and
abide as Christ’s bride made beautiful for the wedding banquet because
Jesus is our husband not our boyfriend but better
get ready to work once the wedding is over when
marriage makes us martyrs
no not al Qaeda’s kamikazi killers
more likely domestically task-distracted guilt-mongerers like
Martha Martha Martha worried by many things wanting
help with housework complaining to Christ who
would not take the better part from the sister seated at his feet
more like Mother Mary’s submission impossible to the angel Gabriel:
“here am I
let it be with me according to your word” wisdom words of
wisdom a witness whispered in wonder a
Magnificat manifesto
the Mighty One has done great things for me
scattered the proud
lifted the lowly
filled the hungry
and the wealthy should consider themselves luckier than the flaming failure in
the Rich Man and Lazarus if the worst thing that happens is a tax hike
hell hath no fury worse than Godless eternity across the chasm
fixed between greedy goats and meek not weak sheep led by
a sharp-tongued Lamb whose word is a sword that destroys strongholds puts
princes in their place and laughs at nation-states so
stop worrying about what you’ll eat or drink or drive your
hairs are counted if uncombed from your Babylon bed-head so
ready set go wake up get up stand up
start careening across this crazy cross-shaped balance beam lean
neither too far right nor left leap
that steep stump of a steeple with help from your people and find yourself
falling across the It Is Finished line into the Everlasting Arms
that reach across the breach at the last gasp to catch your sorry

Our friends in the Franconia Mennonite Conference have published an article about Peace Fellowship on their blog. Here's a snippet:

Peace Fellowship meets in a place rather incongruent with its name: a local Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall.
Peace Fellowship, an emerging partner congregation with Franconia Conference, is a multiracial congregation located in the northeast quadrant of Washington, D.C. It sits east of the Anacostia River in the Kenilworth-Parkside neighborhood, right on the border with Maryland.

Like many churches, Peace didn’t want to just be located in a random neighborhood; it wanted to be in a place where it could reach out to the community around it, therefore, geography has always been important. From the start, the church has been intentional about locating itself on the east side of the city, which has significantly higher rates of poverty and crime.

After getting rained out Monday night, and having a very modest kick-off on Tuesday, we had an explosion of participation thanks to the efforts of our volunteers. Here are a few reports and shout-out from this week's VBS.

From Kristi McGhee:

We had actors, musicians, crafters, gamers, storytellers, counselors, grillers, bakers, dancers, drivers, nametaggers. ... all in one church.
Thank you for all your efforts to bless kids this week. It's always hard to know the impact these events have on young lives. Let's pray for the seeds that were planted and multiplying effects on our community.

From Deann:

Thanks for all that you did, Kristi, to make this week happen...and Beth and Carmen and our whole team. I have to say that I'm really grateful for Winston and Sandy too. When we got to Benning each evening, they had collected permission slips, had kids gathered, etc. That was a HUGE help and essentially allowed us to have kids to love on....

2. In v. 1 the author instructs us to "strip off every weight that slows us down." Another translation (NIV) says, "Throw off everything that hinders." In addition to the sin that hinders (NLT), entangles (NIV) or besets (KJV), what else can distract us from the things of God?

3. How is Jesus “The champion who initiates and perfects our faith” (v. 2)?

4. Verse fourteen tells us to "live in peace with everyone." How is this accomplished when we encounter people who are unabashedly antagonistic and contrary toward us or otherwise "not holy" in some sort of way? Explain.

This week's questions:

1. Hebrews says that faith is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen; the evidence of things we cannot see (11: 1). In other words, it means that we believe in God and His promises though we have no tangible proof that He exists or that anything we read in the Bible will ever come to pass. The author then remembers people who demonstrated this kind of faith and devotion to God. Why is God pleased when we put our trust in that which we cannot see? After all, practically speaking, this would not make much sense! We are taught as children to "check things out" (i.e., get proof!!!) before we invest time and energy into something.

2. Faith and Action working together. In each of the writer’s examples, the faithful did something (note the action verbs) to demonstrate their belief in God and what He promised. However, they are never depicted as bringing about their own desired outcome. It is always clear that God is also faithful to stand by His word. In what ways are the people mentioned demonstrating their faith by their responses to God's promises? In practical terms, what action(s) are to accompany our prayers in our various circumstances? Explain.

3. Modern-day "faith" preachers and teachers. Develop a response to those who purport a "name it and claim it" doctrine. In light of the faithful warriors of Hebrews 11, who did not receive (in this lifetime) all that God promised (11: 13, 39), illustrate how faith is not always connected to getting and receiving. Unfortunately, the Church in America (and specifically in African American communities) has been smitten with materialism. Thus certain teachers and preachers have benefited greatly from this false teaching!!!

Hebrews Week 8 Study Questions

Let's Hold On; We Can Make It Together! (Hebrews 10:1-39)

This week's questions:

1. From the onset, Hebrews has consistently argued for the supremacy of Christ over all of creation. Drawing from a variety of OT images and references, He has been depicted as being the ultimate high priest and advocate to the Father on behalf of those believing in Him (9: 24). Thus the author has been stressing an immediate need for faith in Jesus. Chapter 10 begins with more discussion on the inadequacy of the Old Covenant and praising the New. In light of these points, what is the deliberate and continual sin of Heb. 10: 26?

2. Look at the "let us" section (verses 22-25). Brainstorm as to how we can be practical in fulfilling these admonitions in our church context.

3. The virtue of Christian 'faith' or 'faithfulness' is introduced in this week's passage (10: 38 quoting Hab. 2: 4). The writer will bolster his argument in the next chapter. Nevertheless, how is Christian faithfulness to be demonstrated in a pure and relevant way?

Hebrews Week 7 Study Questions

New and Improved! (Hebrews 8:1-13 & 9:11-28)

This week's questions:

1. Hebrews' author believes that the Old Covenant (OC) was deficient (8:7). According to the writer, even God found fault with it (8: 8)! How can this be? What did the OC entail? Did God make a mistake?

2. In 8: 13 the writer says that God rendered the OC 'obsolete.' What does that mean? Should we do away with the Old Testament altogether? Should Christians only rely on the New Testament now? Explain.

3. The word 'covenant' is mentioned twelve times in chapters eight and nine. The author is comparing the natures of the two covenants. In the OT the word commonly referred to legal matters between two parties. In essence, it was an agreement. Therefore, if the Israelites did all that God asked them to do, they would be blessed. If they defaulted on their responsibilities in the agreement, there were consequences (see Dt. 28). In the NT, however, some commentators believe the 'covenant' has more to do with God's disposition towards His own. In other words His promises to us are not contingent on our allegiance to a list of rules. What do you think? What, if any responsibility, do we share in this New Covenant?

This week's questions:

1. In what ways does the character of Melchizedek foreshadow the person of Jesus, according to the author of Hebrews?

2. Hebrews has consistently maintained that Jesus is a priest forever in the "line" of Melchizedek (5: 6, 10, 6: 20, 7: 11, 17 & 21. The word "line" has been translated in other versions as "order" or "like." Other synonyms for the term are "manner," "nature" and "kind." It is a reference to the special nature of His priesthood.

a. In what ways are the priesthoods of Jesus and Melchizedek alike, according to Hebrews 7?

b. Melchizedek's priesthood, like that of Jesus, is of an eternal nature and kind . Why is this important? How does it surpass the Levitical priesthood?

3. The author insists that because of Jesus, the eternal high priest, we are the recipients of a "better covenant" (7: 22). In light of the preceding, why don't we offer sacrifices to Jesus? What, if anything, do we have to do?

4. Meditate a bit on 7:24-25, considering the notion of "forever." Practically speaking, what does it mean for Jesus to be able to "save completely" and to be your Intercessor forever? How does that make you feel?

February 10, 2008 Moving Forward, Not Backward (Hebrews 5:11—6:20)

This week's questions:

1. The author compares some Christians to babies who are only able to digest milk (5: 13). The writer insists that they have not matured enough to handle the "solid food" of our faith (5: 14). How should we understand this "solid food" of the Christian faith? Practically speaking, how is this solid food consumed?

2. "Falling away" is something that keeps coming up in Hebrews (we'll see the idea again in 10:26). What is meant by "falling away" from the faith? (Try to discern what it entails and what it does NOT entail).

3. In 6:10 the author speaks of things that "accompany" or "come with" salvation, and he is confident that his audience will display these things. What might those things be?

4. Within this passage we get our first glimpse into the motifs of hope, faith and patience (6: 11, 12). These are key themes in Hebrews. The writer will expound upon them in greater detail in chapter 11. Explain the significance of these themes in the salvation that is in store for God's people.

February 3, 2008 The Most Sympathetic Ear (Hebrews 4:14 – 5:10)

This week's questions:

1. A couple of weeks ago, we discovered that Hebrews depicts Jesus as a "faithful high priest" (2:17). Then we looked to the Old Testament for High Priest references in order to get a better understanding of the author's illustration. This week the ministry of Jesus as High Priest is further elucidated. According to Hebrews, priests are able to minister effectively to God's people regarding their sins because the priests themselves are able to relate to the scourge of temptation and sin (5:2, 3). Jesus, however, is depicted as One who encountered every temptation that is common to mankind, but was without sin (4:15). Thus how can someone who never sinned truly relate to the human predicament?

2. Note that 4:16 insists that because Jesus was tempted as all human beings are, we can have confidence when we pray.

a. What does it mean to pray with boldness, or confidence?

b. What is it that is promised to us?

c. How does this make you feel?

d. How might you pray differently in the future, in light of this verse?

3. In 5: 8 Jesus is said to have "learned obedience." What does this mean? Would Jesus have to have been disobedient at some point in order to "learn obedience?" Explain.

4. Looking Ahead: Melchizedek.

The author, quoting Psalm 110, says that Jesus is a priest forever according to the order, or type, of Melchizedek. In a word, Jesus is not a Levitical priest like Aaron and his sons were. This will be expounded upon in greater detail later on (Chapter 7). However, read Genesis 14:17-24 and Psalm 110. These are the two OT references to Melchizedek. Who was he? What was/is his significance?

January 27, 2008 Hard Head, Hard Heart, Hard Time! (Hebrews 3:1—4:13)

Discussion Questions:

1. In this week's passage, Hebrews' author is interpreting Psalm 95 in light of Jesus. He tells us to "think" about Him. Read the Psalm in its entirety. What is the significance of the author's sense of urgency in thinking about and "listening to Jesus' voice 'today'" (see vv. 3: 7, 13, 15 & 4: 7)?

2. Check out Exodus 17:1-7 and Numbers 13-14. These situations appear to be what is behind Psalm 95 and Hebrews 3:16-19. What do you think of the Israelites in those passages? Are we ever like that today?

3. "God's rest" is another phrase that came up many times in our passage (see 3: 11, 18, 19 & 4: 1-11). What are some ways of understanding God's rest and what does it have to do with the Sabbath?

4. Review the ways that the author gives to insure that his audience will "enter God's rest" (i.e., the list from the sermon, or make a new list based on places like 3:16-19; 4:11-13).

Discussion Questions

1. Hebrews is replete with OT references. In chapter 2 the author quotes Psalm 8: 4-6; 22: 22 and Isaiah 8: 17, 18. Read these texts in their context. What is the significance of the author of Hebrews putting the words of the Psalm 22 and Isaiah in Jesus' mouth? How is Jesus equating Himself to humanity?

2. According to Hebrews 2, Jesus is a "faithful High Priest," a notion that will be expounded upon later on in the book. First, using a concordance look to the OT to find some references to the High Priest. What were his roles/duties? Compare to Hebrews 2 and the ministry of Jesus. In an ultimate sense, why were the priests of old insufficient? Why was Jesus deemed the faithful High Priest?

3. Now what? Drawing from the conclusions that have been gleaned from the discussion of questions one and two, how are we to conduct ourselves?

4. Reflect a moment on Hebrews 2:18 (feel free to compare it with Heb 4:15). How does Jesus help us when we are tempted?

5. How might the message of 2:14-15 help to communicate hope to our friends and others who do not have a relationship with Jesus?

1. List the ways that Jesus is described in Heb 1:1-4. See if you can match those attributes with the OT citations in vv. 5-13.

2. Look more closely at v. 3. Just what might it mean that, "The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God?" How is this character evident in the world?

3. Jesus is compared to angels in these verses. According to 1:6, 7, 14, and 2:2 what do angels do? So, how is Jesus better?

4. What do you think of the warning of 2:1-4? How do we keep from drifting away?

5. Practically speaking, how do we communicate (or otherwise demonstrate) this greatness of Jesus to people around us?

Attached are pics taken w/my phone camera a few hours after the baby's arrival. I understand that the baby's name will be Symia (pronunciation is sa-MI-yuh, not sure of spelling). She was 4 lbs, 14 oz and all seems well. If we can help, as Deann suggested, with food, etc, that will be great.
